Providing local people with affordable new homes

With property prices rising across the South East it is increasingly difficult for first-time buyers and young people to afford a home where they grew up.

The average house price in West Berkshire is nearly eleven times the average salary in the area, according to government figures.

We’ve drawn up our plans to respond to these problems.

We will deliver 165 new homes of which 66 (40%) will be allocated for affordable housing. These will be a combination of below-market rent and also shared-ownership. This would help hardworking locals like those we’ve quoted have a home of their own in the area they know and love.

We’re also including housing for older people to enable them to continue living in the area.

To the right are the views of three local residents.

New homes are really needed here. If my children and I moved here it would improve our quality of living immensely.

I work full time, yet I’ve been told I can’t afford a mortgage in the local area. This planning application would give me a chance to actually get on the housing ladder. Homes are so expensive across Tilehurst

Local families like ours need new affordable homes so that we can continue to live in the area where we have put down roots
